Houston Certified E-Waste Recycling Company, TechnoCycle, Improves Odds for Local Elementary School Students and their Families through Outreach Effort

TechnoCycle Applies their Environmentally Responsible Business Approach to Outreach Efforts, Impacting both Short and Long Term Community Outcome

HOUSTON – February 25, 2013 –  Certified e-waste disposal and computer recycling services company, TechnoCycle, donates dozens of refurbished computers to young students of Houston ISD’s James Berry Elementary School, an Environmental Science Magnet School.

The computers are part of a program TechnoCycle has launched to help connect children with valuable online HISD educational tools and resources that are not accessible without a computer and the Internet. Working in partnership with Technip, each first grade student was provided a computer preloaded with Windows 7 and Office 2007 – and given access to affordable Internet services with Comcast.

According to TechnoCycle owner and founder Mike Buckles, by giving every Berry Elementary first-grader a network-ready computer they are providing students with the opportunity to access HISD-related educational tutorials and homework, and student families the opportunity to develop computer skills, improve language, and increase job skills.

“Since the computers have gone home students have had online access to teachers and class materials.  As a result, we have seen these students’ grades greatly improve and parental involvement has increased in a way that would not have happened in the past,” said HISD Berry Elementary School Magnet Coordinator Erin Chavez.

“TechnoCycle supports our environmental mission and provides an equal opportunity for our students by bridging the digital divide. This program helps students gain a better understanding of technology, and helps parents through weekend tutorial sessions as an added bonus.  That’s a true partnership.  They do more than just show up.  They’re helping us remove the barriers,” added Chavez.

TechnoCycle has partnered with Technip, a leading project management, engineering and construction company for the energy industry, to provide a total of 135 computers to Berry Elementary students – with plans to grow the program within the Houston community.

“Berry Elementary is our pilot program,” said Buckles.  “We hope to learn from this experience and gradually expand the program to additional HISD elementary schools, especially in underserved neighborhoods. The benefits of placing computers into the hands of these students early on cannot be overstated.  It is essential to ensuring that they don’t get left behind technologically.”

Recognized over the past three years among the Houston Business Journal’s prestigious listing of Houston’s fastest growing private companies – Houston’s Fast 100 2012 – TechnoCycle applies its environmentally responsible approach to its outreach efforts to positively impact communities.

“Setting the highest standards for the responsible disposal and recycling of e-waste is the cornerstone on which our company is built.  Reusing computers to better educate and strengthen communities through such outreach programs is a natural extension of this,” added Buckles.

Those wanting to get involved in this effort by making a donation or becoming the sponsor of a student to offset the expense of the monthly Internet service fee can complete a donation form online or contact TechnoCycle for more information.
